Most AI receptionists are a template you fill in. Yours is software we write.
Ten AI receptionists and answering services, read from their own pages on August 9, 2026 and sorted by the one thing a plan list cannot show you: whether anybody will write software around your business. Eight of the ten publish no build offering at all.
What is the difference between an AI receptionist platform and a custom build?
One of them already exists. A platform ships the same product to every buyer and hands you a form to fill in, which is exactly why it can publish a plan list. A build is software written for one business: your rules, your dashboard, your systems, and whatever your industry needs the call to do. Eight of the ten companies below publish no build offering of any kind.
Every cell read from that company’s own pricing page on August 9, 2026. This table shows the shape of each company’s billing, not its prices; the twelve comparison pages below carry the plan lists, the overage rates and the arithmetic in full. Ten competitors, each counted once: Smith.ai's AI and human ladders are one company and one page. Read from each company's own pricing page.
| Company | What you are billed on | Try before you buy | Will they build software for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosie | Minutes | 7 days | None published |
| Dialzara | Minutes | 7 days | None published |
| Goodcall | Unique callers | None published | None published |
| My AI Front Desk | Credits: voice, SMS and chat draw one balance | 7 days | None published |
| Ask Benny | Minutes | 7 days | None published |
| Metrili | Flat tiers: nothing above the entry plan is published | 14 days | None published |
| Smith.ai | Calls: AI and human ladders | Free AI tier; 30-day money-back on human plans | None published |
| Ruby | Minutes, answered by live receptionists | None published | None published |
| Dialbox | Call pools: over the cap you move up a plan, no overage | 7 days | Managed tier published |
| Dark Harbor | Nothing: flat and unlimited | None published | Implementation build and AI Ops retainer published |
| AnswerAI | Nothing: there is no meter | Free pilot, about 14 days, no call limit | The build is the product |
Two rows are worth reading twice. Dialbox publishes no per-minute billing and no automatic overages, which is the cleanest billing story in the set. Dark Harbor is the only competitor whose pricing page sells a build at all, and it sells it as a separate one-time fee on top of the software. Everyone else in that last column publishes nothing; a price-shopper never thinks to ask about it until they need it, and by then they have bought a configuration screen.
What do you get from a build that a template can’t ship?
A person writes the software against your business instead of a form collecting your answers, and then keeps maintaining it. Everything below follows from that.
Software, not a settings page
A platform ships one product to every buyer and gives you a form to fill in. Yours gets written, and what it does is scoped with you before it is built, not picked off a feature list.
Your own dashboard
Every call logged, transcribed and searchable, and you can listen back to any one of them. It is where you watch the thing work, from the first pilot call onward.
It writes into the software you already run
Where your tool has an endpoint for it, the write happens live. Where it does not, the call still ends resolved: details captured, request relayed, a person notified. How deep the write goes is something you are told before you sign, never after.
Every rule comes from your business
Anything it gets wrong is a rule we fix, not a model you hope improves. Even a model change is tested against calls your receptionist already handles before it reaches your live line.
It makes your industry's call
An agent bundled into a CRM is configured from that CRM's fields and measured on booking rate. Triage, intake and the call that shouldn't be booked at all are not booking problems.
A short client list
A small number of businesses at a time. That is a real limit on how fast we take work, and it is the reason your build gets the attention it does.
None of that is a feature you switch on. It is the difference between buying a product and commissioning one.
The comparisons
One page per competitor: their plans in full, a cost model with the arithmetic shown, and a plain statement of what they do better than us. Grouped by what you would actually be buying.
Start with the category question
Most people compare categories before they compare brands.
- AI receptionist vs answering serviceWhat you are buying when a person answers instead of software, and how many of your calls genuinely need one.
- AI receptionist vs hiring a receptionistA full-time receptionist covers 40 of the 168 hours a week your phone can ring. The model covers the other 128.
The platforms you configure yourself
Six pages. Each of these publishes a plan list you can buy from without speaking to anyone, and none of them publishes a build offering of any kind.
- AnswerAI vs RosieSelf-serve by their own description, minutes sold by the bundle, and the overage rate they do not publish.
- AnswerAI vs DialzaraFour tiers of included minutes and an overage that falls as you climb. What that does to a bill at real call volume.
- AnswerAI vs GoodcallThe only per-customer model here: minutes are unlimited, repeat callers are free, and new ones are not.
- AnswerAI vs My AI Front Desk“Set up in 5 minutes”, and one credit balance that voice, SMS and chat all draw down at once.
- AnswerAI vs Ask BennyCAD, bilingual, CFIB partner, and an integrations page honest enough to label the unbuilt ones, which is the bar our own cluster has to clear.
- AnswerAI vs MetriliPitched on simple pricing, with every tier above the entry plan unpublished. We tested that claim against what is actually on their pages.
Sold with a build
The only two competitors whose own pricing pages sell something done-for-you.
- AnswerAI vs DialboxCalgary, CAD, PIPEDA residency, call pools that cap instead of metering. The closest direct competitor, compared row by row.
- AnswerAI vs Dark HarborThe only other Alberta shop that will build. What a published implementation fee buys, and whether it is worth paying separately from the software.
Answered by people
A different product with a different failure mode, and it belongs in its own group.
- AnswerAI vs Smith.aiThe only free-forever AI tier in the category, a real human fallback behind it, and what the free tier stops covering.
- AnswerAI vs RubyLive North American receptionists, billed by the minute. Their page states no customisation fee, and publishes no customisation.
Every AI receptionist on this page can book an appointment. What separates them is the call that doesn’t fit the script, and no configuration screen has ever been able to hand you that.
The only comparison that settles it is the one you can hear
Fourteen days to a working agent built on your business, no call limit, no setup fee. Keep it or walk away. Call it and try to break it.
