Answering service alternatives, with what each one actually charges

Start free pilotFree pilot. About 14 days to a working line, no call limit.

The alternatives to a traditional answering service fall into three groups: AI platforms you configure yourself, services sold with a build attached, and live receptionist services still answered by people. Ten named providers are listed below with their published entry pricing and what each one meters, because the meter (minutes, calls, unique callers or credits) matters more to your final bill than the headline price does. Every entry links to a full comparison with that provider's complete plan ladder and overage terms.

Prices read from each company's own pricing page and re-verified on August 9, 2026. This category moves quickly (nine of eleven providers had changed something within ten days during our last verification pass) so treat these as dated evidence rather than live quotes.

AI platforms you configure yourself

The largest group, and the cheapest to start. You write the script, connect the calendar and tune it yourself; nobody builds anything for you. Eight of the ten providers we track publish no build or implementation offering at all.

  • Dialzara

    From $29 USD: 60 minutes · metered on minutes · 7-day trial

The genuine price floor of this category once My AI Front Desk's $20 chat plan is set aside. Four tiers of included minutes with a published per-minute overage that falls as the tiers rise, which is unusually transparent for this market.

    Full Dialzara comparison

  • Rosie

    From $49 USD: 250 minutes · metered on minutes · 7-day trial

Three tiers, each a bundle of minutes, and explicitly self-serve on their own pages. Also ships a chat widget, which is a real advantage if your enquiries arrive by web as much as by phone.

    Full Rosie comparison

  • Goodcall

From $79 USD: 100 unique customers · minutes unlimited

The only per-customer model in the set: minutes are unlimited and the meter runs on unique callers past the tier's count. That inverts the usual arithmetic: a business with many repeat callers does unusually well here, and one with mostly first-time callers does badly.

  • My AI Front Desk

Voice from $99 USD: 200 minutes · credits shared across voice, SMS and chat

The advertised $20 plan includes zero voice minutes and is a chat product; real voice entry is $99. Voice, SMS and chat all draw down one credit balance, so a text-back is not free; it competes with your calls.

  • Ask Benny

    From $99 CAD: 300 minutes · metered on minutes · 7-day trial

Canadian, billed in CAD, and publishes around twenty named integrations, labelling the unbuilt ones "Soon", which is more honest than most of this category manages.

    Full Ask Benny comparison

  • Metrili

    From $149 CAD · flat tiers · 14-day trial

Canadian, and the longest free trial in the set at fourteen days. Nothing above the entry plan is published, so the cost of growing with them cannot be worked out in advance from their own pages.

Sold with a build attached

Only two of the ten publish anything done-for-you on their pricing pages. If you do not want to configure a phone agent yourself, this is a much shorter list than the category's marketing implies.

  • Dialbox

From $129 CAD: 100 AI-handled calls · call pools · Managed tier published

Canadian, metered on call pools rather than minutes: go over the cap and you move up a plan rather than paying an overage rate. Publishes a Managed tier, which makes it one of only two here offering to do the work for you.

    Full Dialbox comparison

  • Dark Harbor

From $200: flat and unlimited · implementation build and AI Ops retainer published

Flat, unlimited, with no meter at all, structurally the closest thing in this list to how we charge. Publishes an implementation build and an ongoing retainer. Their pricing pages state no currency, so we quote none.

Still answered by people

The incumbent category, and the one worth keeping if what you actually value is a human voice. Both entries below are genuinely good at what they do, and both cost several times what an AI platform does per call.

  • Ruby

From $250 USD: 50 minutes · live receptionists

Real receptionists, not AI, with the price that implies: converted to a per-call basis at a 76-second average, the entry tier works out around $5.00 a minute of talk time. If a human voice is the requirement rather than the preference, this is the category leader.

    Full Ruby comparison

  • Smith.ai

Free AI tier: 25 calls · then $150 USD · AI and human ladders

The only genuinely free tier in the set at 25 calls a month, and the one place to start if your volume is genuinely tiny. Runs both an AI ladder and a human one, which makes it the most flexible entry here and the hardest to compare like for like.

Built for one business

For completeness, and stated the same way as everything above: what you get, not what we decline to publish.

  • AnswerAI

One flat monthly fee. Unlimited calls, no meter, no overage line. · About 14 days, built with you, starting with a free pilot, no call limit.

Custom software written for one business, against your own call log. None. There is no meter to go over. No setup fee. The build is the product, and it is included. Your own dashboard: every call logged, transcribed, searchable, and yours to listen back to.

How we compare across the field

How should you actually choose between these?

Four questions, in this order. Price is deliberately not the first one, because at realistic volumes the meter moves the bill more than the headline figure does.

  • What does it meter, and what is your volume?Minutes, calls, unique callers and credits behave completely differently as you grow. Work out your own monthly volume first, then price each plan against it.
  • What is the overage rate?Nobody in this category publishes it beside the headline price and four of eleven publish none at all. Ask before signing; it is the number that determines what a busy month costs.
  • Who does the building?Eight of ten publish nothing done-for-you. If you do not want to write the script and wire the calendar yourself, that fact narrows the field faster than price does.
  • What happens when it gets something wrong?A configurable template gets fixed by you. A built line gets fixed by whoever built it. Neither is automatically better, but only one of them is your evening.

Eight of the ten alternatives to an answering service sell you software and leave you to configure it. AnswerAI writes the line for your business against your own call log, and the build is included in the monthly rather than quoted on top of it.

Questions about the alternatives

It depends on which part of the answering service you are trying to replace. If it is the human voice, Ruby and Smith.ai's human ladder are the closest substitutes. If it is the cost, the self-serve AI platforms start around $29 to $49 a month. If it is the fact that an answering service can only take a message rather than book anything, you want something that holds your live calendar, which is a much shorter list.

Substantially, per call. Converted to a common unit at a measured 76-second average call, self-serve AI plans work out between roughly $0.49 and $1.50 per answered call, against about $7.20 for a live receptionist plan at comparable volume. Whether that is the right trade depends on whether a human voice is a requirement for your customers.

Ask Benny, Metrili and Dialbox all bill in CAD and present as Canadian. Dark Harbor makes a Canadian data-residency claim, though it appears on their Alberta solutions page rather than their pricing page, and their currency is not stated anywhere. AnswerAI is based in Calgary and builds across Canada and the United States.

Two of the ten publish anything done-for-you: Dialbox has a Managed tier and Dark Harbor publishes an implementation build with an ongoing retainer. The other eight are configure-it-yourself platforms, which is a legitimate model and considerably cheaper; it simply is not the same purchase.

Read from each company's own pricing page and re-verified on 9 August 2026. This category moves fast: on that verification pass, nine of eleven companies had changed something within ten days, including two whose trial terms were wrong in opposite directions in our previous scan. Check before you commit.
